i’ve often thought that some of the best things in life, while not free, can come pretty cheap. there are times when i am so easily amused it’s scary. in addition to uncontrollable urges for sugar and sex i now have a new and powerful little compulsion.

there’s a big lots in my neighborhood and at any given time it can be chock-full of the most wonderful and useless crap bent on delight and amusement. now i could care less about more conventional stores, and shopping malls cause angry, biblical proportion hives to erupt all over my body. even a would-be innocent trip to the grocery store can produce a meltdown if the stars are not aligned just so.

curious then that i get all revved up about a jaunt through this bargain and closeout crap. but I do…you’ll find me in my pith helmet, peering down the barrel of my wallet with an incredible find in my sites. keeping with the safari analogy - yes, i have to hack my way through some pretty dense foliage at times; pure shit that is easily spotted and ignored. but oh for those bars of san francisco soap company’s pure vegetable glycerin soap - 49 cents!!! or a bag of angel flake coconut and bakers semi-sweet morsels - 99 cents each. ( all the cookies are now gone - nice how one addiction is ‘feeding’ into another )

last night i made a quick round and picked up some cotton tea towels - 99 cents, red devil paint (in mocha and sand dollar)- $1.99, whiskas kitty treats - 79 cents, and right there awaiting my grasping fingers, among cheaply produced compilation cd’s, one copy only, as if to say “calico at last! lets go home” was a dvd of john travolta in ‘the boy in the plastic bubble’; let me tell you it was all i could do not to shout - it was destined to be mine but when i saw the sticker which read $4.99 i nearly swooned. so i'll not turn my back on fun-filled vacations and first-class accommodations but for a quick, cheap thrill i know exactly where to go.

prevention is kinder than destruction. each year over six million healthy dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are killed as surplus. remember: neuter, spay and don't let them stray!
