satin and silver

somewhere between chaos and control - perhaps tilted a bit more towards chaos - is where i’m at just now. nearly three years after the death of my father, my brilliant and kind but infuriatingly ineffectual brother is still hashing out the remains of the patriarch’s estate. finally all the needling and cajoling paid off when monday i was given about 72 hours notice to have my movers at the storage facility that has housed the last pieces of trash and treasure that made up my father’s possessions. he was an antique merchant, furniture maker, pack-rat and child of the great(?) depression…this means there was some serious juggling and delegating to do.

my brother, even under the best of circumstances, is a tragic procrastinator so it has taken much longer than this kitty would like to deal with the tedious affairs of one man’s long and fairly happy life. my father and i didn’t particularly care for one another’s company but we never took the liberty of admitting so - at least not to one another’s face. but the old man had some interesting experiences and if you happen to be among the few who are not his actual offspring he could be quite charming and heroic. what he was unable to do for me in life he at least tried to do after his exit. bearing in mind that i do not have sappy sentimentality and i do have a fervent appreciation for cash i had chosen to pass on some of the larger items dear daddy designated for me. word: bad idea.

after four siblings, an aunt and an uncle did their scavenging the detritus ended up in a (shudder) storage facility. well, this just about killed me. if said facility contained pieces no one wanted why were we allowing the estate to be drained of the monthly fees? whether logic or the need for my silence was the motivator my brother finally relinquished the details and on a rainy thursday morning a four-man crew hauled the loot into my home. so i’m picking and sorting and deciding to maybe work some things into my eclectic décor but i don’t do fancy, fussy, or high maintenance so satin slipper chairs and silver victorian tea services will likely find their way to a local dealer or even ebay. i must be fortified for this endeavor, and given that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, dirt was kind enough to let me coax a quick shot of pure protein from him first thing this morning!

prevention is kinder than destruction. each year over six million healthy dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are killed as surplus. remember: neuter, spay and don't let them stray!
