i’m looking at everything around me and weighing its significance. does it bring pleasure, does it have purpose? my goal is to travel lightly through this life, to surround myself with things that hold a certain appeal but not power. everywhere i turn i see people placing far too great an importance on possessions as if stickers and labels and crests and logos can be used as magic talismans to ward off mediocrity. it’s sickening. i am not my car, my shoes or my bank balance. nice things and the power to purchase them are terrific but if it were to suddenly be taken away i’d like to think i’d be alright - that what is truly real would remain.
three or four times now the task has fallen on me to clear out a relative’s home after their demise…to catalogue charitable donations for tax purposes, etc. i don’t wish that job on anyone. years and years of accumulated trash wedged in right next to treasure! so many people in need of items that were allowed to crumble and mildew; things that could have been put to good use or sold for profit. how important could something be if it has occupied space in the attic corner decade upon decade? so for me its going to come out of the box, put to use or sent on down the line.

prevention is kinder than destruction. each year over six million healthy dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are killed as surplus. remember: neuter, spay and don't let them stray!
